Snoring & Sleep Apnea Snoring affects millions of relationships by forcing our sleep partners to either elbow us in the back or sleep in a different room. If our sleep partner stops breathing repeatedly, this could be a condition called sleep apnea. This can cause restless sleep leading to daytime tiredness and headaches and can cause memory and sexual problems. As time passes, this lack of restful sleep can place a strain on our heart and lungs and can lead to high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. An evaluation by and ear, nose and throat physician can determine what is going on and how severe the problem may be. Once the problem is put into focus, treating these can dramatically improve the quality, and in many cases, the quantity of our lives. Many cases of snoring or mild apnea can be successfully treated by placing small implants into the palate, thereby preventing the tissues from collapsing or vibrating, and improving these problems. This procedure is done with local anesthesia in the office and has literally no down time or pain. Sometimes the problem is more moderate and may require a special mask called CPAP to hold the tissues open, or may require a more moderately in depth surgery to correct the problem. In any of these cases, we do not have to live with chronic snoring or daytime tiredness and we can look forward to feeling better every night and day while rekindling our relationships with our sleep partners. |
